About NARFBR
Animal experimentation in biomedical research remains crucial to finding better ways to understand, prevent, treat, and cure diseases as currently, there are very limited alternatives to substitute biological systems. New drug research and tests to ensure the quality and efficacy of pharmaceutical products/vaccines/biological research require animal experiments. The use of animals for research is essential to developing new and more effective methods for diagnosing and treating diseases that affect both humans and animals. Essentially every breakthrough in new drug/vaccine development has been the direct result of research using animals. A very limited number of facilities with international accreditations are involved in pre-clinical testing in India.
Considering the growing demand from academic/research institutes/pharma and biotech industries, need to create a state-of-the-art resource facility for pre-clinical research was ascertained. After due deliberations with the stakeholders from both private and Government organizations, it was decided to establish National Animal Resource Facility for Biomedical Research (NARFBR). The state government of Telangana offered 100 acres of land free of cost in the Genome valley, a biotech hub in Telangana.
The cabinet committee headed by Honourable Prime Minister gave the approval for the formation of NARFBR on 18th November 2015. The Dept. of Health Research, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare conveyed the orders on 3rd December, 2015 and subsequently, Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) issued a notification on 1st January, 2016 for the creation of NARFBR as a permanent institute under the aegis of ICMR.
